What do others have to say about my dentist?

Going to the dentist is not easy for most people. Not everyone has a phobia of dentists but it is never a pleasant experience, unless one is part of the minority that actually likes people fiddling in their mouth with sharp objects. One important thing that you can do before choosing a dentist is getting to know more about them, so that you know what to expect!

Even if you already have one, it is easy to survey your dentist so that you can find out what other patients have experienced and felt about them. This is can give valuable insight into whether your dentist really is good, and whether you can be doing better!

Fear of dentists is largely linked with the fear of losing control, experts think. The fact that the patient is virtually helpless in the dentist's chair can be a terrorising thought to those that have a phobia of dentists. Also, the mouth is close the eyes and being in the chair; awake, seeing all the action can be understandably scary for many. (more...)

Essentially, the purpose of a toothbrush is to remove dental plaque, stimulate gums and maintain good oral hygiene. There are a number of other factors that are important including your brushing technique, how often and length of time brushing your teeth. And this is where features of manual and electric emergency dental toothbrushes come into play.

According to an emergency dental , dentist Dr. Thornhill, electric toothbrushes do not offer clinically significant advantage compared to manual toothbrushes in terms of removing dental plaque and reducing incidence of dental cavities. Most important factors include how often a patient brushes and length of time spent brushing.

Many dental emergencies can be avoided with proper preventive dental care. Emergency dentists recommend brushes 2 times a day and flossing daily. It is also recommended that people visit their dentist every 6 months for routine check-up and teeth cleaning. Plaque accumulates everywhere in the mouth, not just on teeth and gums so it’s important to brush your tongue as well.

What an Orthodontist Can Do For You

In a perfect world we would all be born with beautiful white, regular teeth, but, unfortunately the world is not quite perfect and often children find their second, or adult teeth coming through with one or more problems where the teeth are overcrowded, protruding, leaning in, twisted, or are anomalous in some other way which we refer to as a malocclusion.

Fortunately, however, children do not have to be stuck with crooked teeth for the rest of their lives. An orthodontist is a special kind of dentist who is expert at correcting these kinds of problems by means of appliances in the mouth "(braces"), which may be fixed or removeable. Sometimes it is necessary to remove one or more teeth to make space for the others to be properly aligned, but more often than not, sophisticated modern fixed appliances make this unnecessary. For example, it is often possible to expand the upper arch of teeth by means of a plastic appliance fitted into the palate incorporating a screw device in the midline that pushes the two halves of the plate apart moving the teeth gradually into the arch of a wider semicircle, thus giving more room.

If teeth are crowded or protruding it is necessary to make some space, usually about halfway round the dental arch and then push the other teeth into the right positions so that they all align nicely. Protruding teeth can be brought back with a wire across the front that puts slight pressure on the front ones to bring them in. Teeth can be moved in many ways with combinations of wires, springs, and elastic bands, but they are only moved slowly and gradually, which allows the jawbone to adapt as they move. Our bones are constantly being reformed anyway, so it is no problem to encourage bone to be resorbed in front of a tooth to allow it to move, and then for it to reform behind it so that the tooth stays firmly fixed in place. Because a slow, progressive movement is necessary with teeth, treatment can often take up to two years to complete, sometimes longer, but the results are so good that nobody really minds this.
